If You WANT To Be A Chief Digital Officer You’d Better Start Preparing NOW

Cheif Digital Officer

It seems that the role of digital marketing is having an even bigger impact on the organizational structure than anyone had thought it would. At one time the only player in the technology driven workspace was the IT Department. They WERE the GODS of the workplace, the organizational powers that be, the Oz of all things with a technology function.

Well, times are a changin’ and those changing times are directly connected to super quick growth of digital marketing. As we continue to venture into the digital space more and more, it is realized that the IT space is very different than the Digital Marketing space. The traditional IT departments’ focus has been on supplying information and technology resources, updating software, infrastructure, viruses, onsite servers and more.  These functions are very different than what is required within the ever-changing digital marketing space. Digital Marketers although technology focused have a different function and that’s to adapt business processes from traditional to digital.  The function of Digital Marketers are geared toward but not limited to Social Media Optimization, Big Data, Content Management, Digital communications, Social Engagement and more.

This space is growing, as is the demand for employees in this Digital Marketing space. It’s not just about having a great website anymore, that was so last decade. Now businesses are scrambling to adapt to changes in consumer behavior. If you know anything about business, you know that losing touch with consumer behavior could be equivalent to digging a grave for your organization.  At one time, consumers read circulars and clipped coupons. Now, consumers use their ipads, mobile devices and QR code scanners to compare pricing and grab deals. Organizations must have a sense of urgency if they plan to keep up with these changes in consumer behaviors. Quite simply they must adapt or die.

Organizations are now aggressively trying to catch up and keep up. They must now be on top of mobile, social, local, visual in ADDITION to web.  Lets not even discuss what new technology is looming just seconds away from being the NEXT BIG thing. The ability to adapt is huge for any organization! This is where the need for a Chief Digital Officer would come in. So, now is the time to jump into this space if you have not done so already.

Roles such as Chief Digital Officer will be an integral part of any organization and they will play a huge role in the very structure of the organization as it moves from traditional to digital.  These Digital Marketing pioneers will be responsible for moving the company’s entire digital presence to another level, from initial digital project development and beyond.  There will be a need to tackle ecommerce, online marketing and social media and transformation of analog to digital media. So this field is huge and growing faster than anyone ever imagined, I’m sure.

According to a study, it is predicted that 25% of businesses will have created and filled the position of Chief Digital Officer by 2015. That is just two years away, so I suggest you dive into the digital marketing space right now if you have not done so already.

If you are in anyway dabbling, working and/or educating yourself about Digital Marketing Technologies you may find yourself on the receiving end of aggressive pursuit because the supply has yet to catch up with the demand for those with this knowledge.

Take a look at the slideshow below to give you an idea of some trends that have been instrumental in directing us toward this path of no return.

In closing I say, we are living through a historical time when everything is transforming before our eyes. NOW is the time to be apart of history making events that will be as pivotal as the 1st automobile, the invention of electricity and/or the 1st color tv.  I recommend anyone that has even the smallest interest in digital marketing dive right in……. the waters warm.

As usual, I welcome comments, good, bad, ugly or indifferent. You can catch me on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ !   Cheers!

Social Scoring & Your Next Job with Infographic

social media scoring

I’ve blogged a bit about social media scoring and it’s importance to digital marketers on a personal level. There is no secret about how I feel about scoring of ones social media presence. Although the various platforms that rate a persons  social media are entitled to do as they please in this space, I just can’t get too wrapped up into scores and allow those scores to reflect who I interact with and how much.

I have quite a few years experience in the traditional marketing field, digital marketing AND a Masters Degree in Internet Marketing so I am very secure in my knowledge in this space.  Experience and tangible results should trump a platforms algorithm based assessment especially when it comes to companies using these platforms to secure employees. An employer should simply Google their candidate, when looking for someone to handle their marketing strategy.  If the potential candidate has a decent digital footprint it WILL be displayed for all to view in Google’s search results

Scoring platforms may not be an accurate method of measuring a digital footprint because there are so many variables that could throw the score off. Suppose the person was working on a project that had them focus on a social media platform that is not in the scoring algorithm, suppose the person was working on a web project, suppose the person was creating a video?  All of these variables would create an avenue in which the person or potential employee was not actively engaged in a social media platform, and this could be reflected in their social media score.   This is just one of the reasons that social media scoring can be deceptive or tricky when utilized for hiring purposes.

However take a look at the infographic below and see how social scoring may be used to determine WHO gets hired.

#Technology and #Entrepreneurship: The Answer To The Recession?? [Infographic]

entrepreneurship

We are in a recession, no doubt about that and it is tough. However recession and a tough economy can bring out the entrepreneur spirit in many people.  In tough times people are almost forced to step it up.   Some of the greatest companies in the world were created during tough economic times.  There are many, one of those companies is Apple, can you believe that?

Amazing stuff!  It seems that due to our own economic downturn we could very well be in the middle of our own entrepreneurship boom and I think a lot of that is fueled by the super quick growth of technology.  Take a look at the infographic below to give you an idea of where innovation is happening:

Will Your Organization Be Embracing The Telecommuting Trend?

Telecommute

I just heard that due to political issues in the Middle East there may be an issue with allowing oil to the US, this could potentially push gas prices up to as much as $5.00 per gallon by the summertime.  I anticipate that this may cause an undo burden upon everyone. The workforce and employees may very well be effected by this more than most, especially those  with a longer commute.

This could be an opportunity for employers to consider telecommuting as an option for positions and employes that would benefit.  The amazing thing about this option is that due to technology it is really possible to make telecommuting a very real and beneficial thing to all involved. The could be a win-win situation for all involved.

Sun Microsystems saved more than $67 million in real estate expenses in 2006 when they shifted 18,000 workers into a telecommuting operation, and Sun saves more than $70 million every fiscal year on real estate costs and operating expenses due to their use of telecommuting workers.

That is some amazing statistics on the benefits of Telecommuting!  Take a look at the cost of commuting below:

#Cloud Computing & Smacking Down Old School Organizational Structures

CloudComputing

I recently wrote about organizations with old school marketing departments and how they will be soon rendered useless. Well, I think I was less harsh with the phrasing, however you all know what I mean. Well, if you think beyond the Marketing Departments of these organizations you will realize that companies and organizations that have held on to an old school way of marketing are usually holding on to an old school way of doing business as well.

Old school organizational structures are a thing of the past. This is primarily due to the growth of technology, social media and companies becoming more global.  As technology grows so does the mindset of employees and potential employees. This can present a challenge to organziations if they are running the company as they did in 1980. We will not even discuss companies that have not changed their way of operating since  the 1960’s or before.

Times have changed, people have changed, technology has changed and companies have to adapt their business structure accordingly.  Some technology changes that have had the biggest impact on workers are mobile technologies. These technologies allow workers to think outside of The CUBE. This means that options for talented employees will grow due to the ability to become more mobile with the growth of technology.  Technology is allowing employees to think outside of their immediate commutable area because they are reaching the point in technology growth that they will no longer be limited by distance. Mobile technology is allowing this to happen right before our eyes. The advancement in computer technologies which has brought us Tablets and Smartphones has moved us that much closer to  true mobility in workplace or workforce I should say.

English: Cloud Computing visual diagram

Cloud computing is one of the final pieces of the puzzle that will allow employees to be totally mobile. This is HUGE for employees because it will allow them to unchain themselves from their cubicle.  This is a great thing for employees that are thinking of  expanding their opportunities. However this may present challenges to the old school organization that have not remained abreast of the growth in technologies.

Cloud computing will allow workplaces to essential remove the need to have a huge server/computer room which is currently used for maintaining data storage and integrity.  Cloud computing allows this data to be stored in “The Cloud”  which allows the information to be ready accessible by all with permission to utilize it. Can we say HUGE??

If companies are able to implement this properly it will allow employees to be cubicle-less and totally mobile. Although this is huge for employees because it would allow them the ability to work from home, work from the beach, work from a little bistro in Italy if they choose. This can also benefit employers as well.

Companies can view this as a negative as some old school organizations may, but it can be viewed as a positive for companies as well. As an organization that is receptive to change, has embraced new technologies, and a change in organizational structure this will give them the opportunity to scout talent beyond the local area. This means increasing the chances of implementing a more global employee base. The ability to grab the best and most talent employees from any location in the world will increase with the acceptance of  Cloud Computing.  Again, this is HUGE.

So ultimately everyone can view these technological advancements as a win win for all. Cloud Computing is a game changer to employees and employers. How we chose to view these changes will determine how we adapt moving forward as employees and employers.

As usual, I welcome comments, good, bad, ugly or indifferent. So feel free to leave a comment here, or catch  me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

The World is Becoming a HUGE place, Time To Go Global

global world

I wrote a blog post about moving companies into a global space. A huge part of my thought process was based on an amazing opportunity presented to move even the smallest company into a global space. The reason that it can be done is the growth of technology which allow us to effecitvely communicate, reach out and meet people from so many different countries. This is a definite opportunity that we did not have before the growth of technology.

Another reason to look beyond business expansion just within our local area is the growth of populations in some of the other countries around the world. We have grown in our ability to reach out to other countries based on technology and we have huge population growths in these countries as well. This gives us an opportunity to work with amazing and diverse populations by expanding globally.

Take a look below to see how much our populations are growing and in which countries they are growing the most.
